PASSION FOR PIGEONS!

E35 – Blois – 2020-08-29

The last one day long distance race of the season. Because of all the COVID troubles only on August 29. A month later than we normally finish. In order to keep the pigeons in the feathers, this requires some “tricks”. Darken a little longer than normal and then light up. Probably most fanciers who still play for a good result do it, so do we. The result: 80% of the team had shouted the 4th pen and 20% 1 more or less. In other words, everyone could join for his / her chance to earn a year contract for next season. Basketing on Wednesday. Another thing that we have never done in NH, but because of the YB and the late competition  could not be otherwise. And then the weather forecast. It did not look too good and a Monday release was already taken into account. None of that. The pigeons “just” went out on Saturday. The starting signal sounded at 9:45 am and the 1,500 best one day long distance pigeons, at least the ones who always managed to get home, had to average 600 km due to rain and wind take it home. Because of the joint release with department 5, we had another target time. If the first pigeons there touch the 1500 meters, then you can safely collect 50 meters because of the extra distance and the fact that they have to go home in a smaller group. Apart from the wind that became more (north) west than southwest. It seemed that that was even too enthusiastic an estimate because in the preliminary flight they did not reach the 1450 meters for a long time. So when we got a pigeon at 4:50 PM, we were at that time 6th report in NH. Only much later it turned out that there were (much) faster ones, but we are very satisfied with a 9th NPO at the end. In terms of series, we had expected a little more from them because they were physically better than all weeks before, but we think that the real drive was out because they have resulted in some rotten flights with overnight stays this season. Many pigeons came home super fit, but much too late. It is very nice to see that the first pigeon of this flight is due to the exchange of two pigeons with Richard Faber, member of the club and competitor in the one day long distance. And the second pigeon stems from the joint breeding with Stephan Gobel, our regular vet. Both took place in 2018. Finally, we remind you of the ‘Amsterdammer’, obtained after mutual exchange with our Zaanse pigeon friend Marcel Kuyt. In summary, with a 2nd, 9th, 18th, 22nd and 32nd NPO in five flights, we can of course not complain. And we don’t. Next year we will of course try to improve this.

After Blois an upward trend was visible in our one day long distance pigeons. A 2nd NPO was played at Blois. Would it work again this time? We will not make it a long story this time. This race shows the difference between the ‘good shape’ and the real ‘top shape’. The difference with the top 10 in department 6 North-Holland is less than 5 minutes …. But just as well, we were again delighted to see our crack pigeon ‘Son Blueliner’ as first arrival. 6 x 1/100 in three years! ‘Red Breezer’, a son of our ‘Red Harry’, is taking another small step forward. One more chance in two weeks, just a little bit more work to do!

E31 – Blois – 2020-08-01

For us, the National one day long distance race is the highlight of the season. Then you want to perform extra well. Unfortunately, this time it was canceled. 5 years ago the entire flight was canceled on the day of basketting. Now the flight was shortened for a large part of the Netherlands. Our sector went to Blois. For us 600 km. Now the results of the previous two one day long distance races were not so great, so expectations were not high. Given the headwind on the first part of the route and the predominantly west wind on the rest of the route, we expected the pigeons from 4:30 PM. With the earliest reports from department 5, it had to be caught at 4:35 pm for a very early one in the sector. But with this wind you can subtract 30 meters per minute from the speed of the fastest pigeons in division 5 as standard, so 4:45 PM came closer. In the meantime, the department already caught on the front flight, so within a few minutes there should be a pigeon. And yes, with raised wings a dove came flying in the distance and dove down. He initially missed the shelf, but via the swing in the garden, he popped the arrival and it was spotted at 4:49 PM. Because we are connected to Unikonweb, the report was automatically passed on to the Compuclub and within seconds we could see that we were 2nd on the report list. Hoppa that’s an early one. Now you can always get passed by late reporters or the overflight, but none of that happened. Normally we are always a bit disapointed with a 2nd place, but this time we were very happy. The first 7 pigeons make a nice run on the first page. Unfortunately, the overall price percentage is too low, but that is mainly due to the hens that are still not racing satisfactorily. But with every pigeons pretty fresh at home and no losses, we can build up to the next one day long distance race. Who knows, maybe that will become a National?

E29 – Blois – 2020-07-18

The second one day long distance race promised to be a beautiful race. All the ingredients for a beautiful race were present. A calm breeze. First 100 km. headwind, then turning to the southwest. Beautiful blue skies with a cloud here and there and of course 4,422 motivated pigeons. Given the speed that today’s pigeon can develop, a speed of around 1400 mpm was taken into account. This also turned out to be possible, given the arrivals in other departments. But at the calculated time there were no reports yet. When the first report came in advance, the tension increased. Unfortunately we could not get close to that time, but just after 3 pm a pigeon came rushing down very fast. It was ‘Wingman’, brother of Iron Man (1st NPO Argenton 2019). Last year he was already 20th NPO on his only one day long distance race. So now the 18th. Truly not a bad result. But it was certainly not a fast flight like in other departments. The pigeons arrived slowly and in the evening there were still some to come. On to National Issoudun. A flight that we look forward to every year.

Fontenay. The first one day long distance race of the season. A flight we are looking forward to for weeks, if not months. Unfortunately, the weather was so bad on Saturday that the release was postponed to Sunday. Fortunately, conditions on Sunday were apparently good enough to release. With a very strong wind from behind and showers on the way, so the question was which pigeons are good enough to keep course under these conditions. We can be brief about that. With only one pigeon on time, it was not a hosanna with us this time. No idea where that was, because the pigeons were fine when basketting. Respect and congratulations to the winners, because even with such flights there are always a number of stars.
